Arkwright Scholarship Trust
The Arkwright Scholarship Trust is an independent Charity founded in 1991, taking its name from the British innovative engineer Sir Richard Arkwright who harnessed water to power his mills where the factory system was also developed.
The Arkwright scholarship scheme encourages a beneficial partnership between education and industry.
Who can apply for Scholarships?
Anyone who is:
- Considering higher education in Engineering Product or Industrial Design.
- In year 11
- Making a commitment to D&T at A/S level and preferably A2
- Making a commitment to Maths at A/S level and preferably A2.
Application Procedure
- Pupils will need to complete an application form supported by the Head teacher and his D&T teacher.
- Sit a two hour design based examination.
- Attend formal interviews at university.
Benefits
Successful candidates will receive £250 per annum. The award is sponsored by industry e.g. Rolls Royce and Microsoft Research Ltd.

Our first success came many years ago with Philip Anthony; he impressed the Arkwright Trust and was awarded his scholarship sponsored by Rolls Royce. Indeed he has since been sponsored through university by the Institute of Electrical Engineers.

Currently there are five Arkwright scholars within the school, Gareth Gwilliam, Zac Clark, both in Year 13 and Jown Ware, James Board and Marcus Turner in Year12.
Within the present year eleven we are awaiting the result of interview for the students who passed the examination.
