Key Stage 4 Mathematics

In years 10 and 11 boys will follow the National Curriculum, studying the areas of number, algebra, shape and space and handling data.  Work completed during this time will prepare boys for their GCSE at the end of year 11.  It will also provide a foundation on which to build at A level or IB.

The GCSE exams consist of two written papers, one without the use of a calculator. There is no coursework component to their assessment in Mathematics.  With the majority of our boys gaining an A or A*, they are all entered for either the Higher tier of papers.

Boys receive 6 lessons of mathematics a fortnight and are taught in classes which are set according to their mathematical ability.  Boys are allocated to sets based on their mathematical competence shown throughout the preceding year and not just on their end of year test.  Adjustments to the year 10 sets will be made where necessary, but typically boys remain in their teaching groups, with their teacher for the whole of KS4.

Written homework is usually organised on a weekly basis to cover current teaching topics together with consolidation, revision and practice of previous work.  The aim is to build up a thorough understanding of the principles involved in the subject and to develop fluency in applying techniques.

Regular assessments are made throughout the course and in year 11, towards the end of the autumn term, boys sit mock examinations.  In preparation for their final examinations, boys are provided with a pack of past papers to work through.  They will also have the opportunity to purchase revision guides from the school library.
