Year 9 Trip to Barcelona
The trip to Barcelona has been running since 2004 during Activities Week. The trip gives all students the opportunity to see one of the best cities in the world, where there are plenty of things to keep everybody entertained.
We stay in a really nice *** Hotel in Blanes, a very well known resort north of Barcelona, with a swimming pool where we are able to cool down in the evenings before dinner.
During the week we visit the Sagrada Familia, such a beautiful cathedral and what a privilege to see the cathedral's construction in progress! Its construction started in 1882 and Gaudi continued with the building from 1883 until his death in 1926 after which various architects have worked on it. The cathedral's building is done with money from donations only, -Gaudi wanted it to be done entirely by "the people", but a lot of money is needed for it, for example, the construction budget for 2009 alone is 18 million euros. The building works are expected to be completed around 2026, the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death. We also go for a walk in Las Ramblas, the nerve of the city centre and visit Gaudi's Parc Güell, with its famous mosaics, and Gaudi's house.
The students spend a morning in the Science Museum, an outstanding hands-on museum. This amazing museum opened in 2005 and has been heralded as the finest science museum in Europe. It has a very innovative layout, making it one of the most modern museums of its kind, with 50.000 m2. The students are able to interact with many of the scientific experiments, making the whole experience richer and more entertaining, no wonder the students like it there! We have lunch in the museum grounds, after which we go to Nou Camp, probably one of the highlights for many of our students, where we do the tour and see the pitch from many different angles and heights.
In the evenings the staff takes the students out for a walk by the beach after dinner.
After all the sightseeing we spend the last day either in the Aquapark at Lloret del Mar or in Port Aventura, an outstanding theme park, giving the students a fantastic way of finishing the week in Barcelona.
