Year 7 Scheme

Pupils will spend 3 weeks gaining key skills in graphical communication skills and design skills before embarking on 3 design and make activities;

  • CAD CAM LED torch

This project provided students with opportunities to develop product that is then manufactured using the laser cutter.  Students make a card and paper prototype to check their designs before cutting the final product from HIP.  The torch consists of 5 layers of plastic, glued together with a 3v lithium coin cell and an ultra bright LED.  An extension activity is to design and manufacture a case for their product.

  • Wooden Desk pad

This project gives pupils opportunities to gain skills and develop confidence using more traditional tools, equipment and methods.  Pupils will design and make several pieces of softwood planes, using saws, drills and powered fret saws before assembling their product using screws and glue.

  • Acrylic Clock

Pupils will gain knowledge and experience of working with acrylic (Polymethylmethacrylate) as well as developing existing skills and understanding through designing and making an acrylic clock.  A card prototype is first made and evaluated before students make the actual product.  Although much of the work is carried out using hand and machine tools, pupils are able to make choices regarding alternative methods of manufacture such as the laser cutter and vinyl cutters.

  • Systems and Control

Pupils are introduced to simple electronic components and by using and microprocessor modules (I.Q. controllers) and software (Flowol) they are able to solve control problems.

Taught over 4 hours per fortnight
