Year 8 Scheme

  • Electronic Flashing Sign

Pupils will have opportunities to learn about simple electronic components (resistors; LED's; transitors) and will prototype and test electronic circuits using breadboards before making a simple moisture detecting product.

Pupils will develop their knowledge of electronics further by experimenting with integrated circuits before designing and making a flashing sign.  Pupils are introduced to circuit simulation software (Yenka) and will use PCB (Printed circuit board) CAD software to design and manufacture their own PCB's before soldering in their components.

  • Metal Box

Pupils manufacture a rectangular box using sheet aluminium.  They fabricate this using sheet metal cutting and forming equipment before drilling and riveting.  They are introduced to the concept of using jigs to aid manufacture.  Pupils then go on to design and making a custom lid for their box using a range of materials.

  • Structures

Pupils will engage in a series of experiments to explore beam design and structural rigidity before designing  and making straw towers in teams.  The team with the strongest tower will be awarded a prize of a bar of chocolate!
