Department Facilities

The department has 4 fully equipped workshops as well as an IT suite and a CAD CAM area. Each workshop includes a full range of hand tools, machine tools, printed circuit board manufacturing equipment, and plastic heat treatment facilities, providing opportunities for students working in any area to enjoy a similar experience. In addition, one workshop is equipped with welding and casting equipment.

Recent additions to the CAD CAM area are our two laser cutters that are capable of cutting wood and plastic up to 10mm thick extremely rapidly. We also have 3D CNC machines and CNC vinyl cutting equipment that pupils are able to use at any time.
Health and Safety

Pupil's safety and wellbeing is a priority for the department. Each teaching area, every item of equipment and every process has a fully documented Risk Assessment. Every member of staff is familiar with these ensuring that all risks are managed and that the teaching areas are a safe place to work. In addition to this, before pupils are allowed to use any tool, machine or process they will be given a full safety briefing and demonstration and they are required to complete a safety 'passport' where they can provide evidence to staff that they are competent and safe when using tools and equipment.
Opportunities for pupils.
At KS3 we deliver a range of focussed practical tasks (FPT) and design and make projects to provide a range of experiences to all students through years 7, 8 and 9. Pupils provide evidence of their work in specially prepared design booklets where they are assessed in key areas of the curriculum allowing us to 'map' their progress and keep students informed on how they can reach their full potential.
The Design and Technology department has it's own 'Electronics Shop' where students can purchase electronic components for project work as well as kits that have been developed in the department. All the specialist software that students will use in the department (ProDesktop; 2D Design; PCB Design and Yenka) are available FREE as a student licence to all pupils currently studying at Torquay Boys' Grammar School)
The Department is also involved in facilitating a range of 'Enterprise' days, working the Business and Enterprise and PE departments.

Competitions
Pupils in all years have opportunities to become involved in a number of extra curricular activities. We currently have a team of pupils developing a solar powered vehicle as part of the Rapid Electronics Toyota Challenge and we are entering our second year in the National Greenpower Competition with a new and improved Battery powered racing car. A big thank you to all our sponsors for the 2009 season.

Current Sponsors for the 2010 season are as follows:
