TBGS Chess Team Success
George Darling, one of TBGS’s rising young chess stars, recently caused quite a stir in Devon chess circles when he won an adult tournament at the annual Paignton Chess Congress at Oldway Mansion. Scoring 5.5 points out of his 7 games in the Minor Tournament, George carried off a first prize of £180 ahead of an entirely adult field of players.
George acknowledged that the result was his best ever and said that his chess had benefited enormously from his trip to Dubai in July when a party of five boys from the school, as part of an English Junior Squad of 22 players, competed in an international Under 14 event in the United Arab Emirates. George scored 5 out of 9 in Dubai and felt that the experience had taught him a great deal and that his Paignton performance reflected this improvement.
George’s next big tournament is with the school’s team when they travel to Millfield School in Somerset for their annual team
tournament on October 20.
The school’s chess teacher, Trefor Thynne commented: “George has a bright future in chess as he is ideally suited to the game both intellectually and temperamentally.”

We also competed in the Under 12 event coming 3rd with two boys winning best Board Prizes (George Darling 6/6 and Jeffrey Leung 5.5/6).
Our Under 16 team did less well coming 7th out of 8 teams but we were handicapped by the unavailability of one or two players in ths age group.
