Congratulations to Ian Fraser, Matt Freeman and Oliver Tozer, students in year 13 at Torquay Boys’ Grammar School, who have won the national final of the Texas Instruments Team Maths Challenge. They secured their place in the final by producing a presentation on global warming using new software created by Texas Instruments. In the final, held at TI’s UK headquarters in Northampton, they faced a series of challenges, including delivering their presentation, and solving problems set by world-renowned science author Simon Singh, most famous for his books on codes and for his book ‘Fermat’s Last Theorem’.

The members of the Torquay team, as well as the members of all the other teams that were invited to the final, were awarded with TI-Nspires, new ‘handheld devices’ made by TI due to be launched in the UK this month. Presenting solutions to mathematical problems on their Nspires was also a major part of the final. Eventually, based on all the challenges set, the judges of the competition unanimously decided that the team from Torquay should be the winners, the prizes being a class set of the new devices for TBGS and themselves a trip to London.

The three students involved say that they have welcomed the opportunity to work with the new devices, and they are also happy to have had the opportunity to solve some challenging mathematical problems. The strength of the opposition meant that the Torquay team was unsure of their victory until the announcement last week. They are now looking forward to their visit to London, when they will visit the BETT technology fair, where their presentation will be used as an example of what can be done using the TI-Nspire.
