Mathematics at Key Stage 3

From years 7 to 9 boys will follow the National Curriculum, studying the areas of number, algebra, shape and space and handling data. Work completed during this time will prepare boys for their Key Stage 3 SATS at the end of year 9. It will also provide a foundation on which to build at GCSE and A level.

The SATS exams consist of two 1 hour papers, one without the use of a calculator, and a shorter mental arithmetic exam. With the majority of our boys gaining a level 7 or 8, they are all entered for either the level 6-8 or the level 5-7 tests.

In year 7 boys receive five lessons of mathematics a fortnight and are taught in their form groups. In years 8 and 9 they have 6 mathematics lessons a fortnight and are taught in classes which are set according to their mathematical ability.

Boys are allocated to sets based on their mathematical competence shown throughout the preceding year and not just on their end of year test.

Written homework is usually organised on a weekly basis to cover current teaching topics together with consolidation, revision and practice of previous work. The aim is to build up a thorough understanding of the principles involved in the subject.

The following equipment is essential for all boys and they are expected to bring it to each lesson:

Pen (blue or black ink) ,Pencil, Ruler, Pair of Compasses, Protractor, Scientific Calculator

Other desirable equipment includes:

Coloured Pencils or Pens, Eraser, Pencil Sharpener.
