About Us – Sixth Form

About Us

The vast majority of our Year 11 students decide to continue their studies with us (around 140 per year). We also welcome students from other schools (around 40 per year).

Any student who meets the entry requirements set out in our Admissions Policy may join us in Year 12, but places are limited and so an application should be submitted before the end of January in Year 11.

A number of students join us in Year 12 from other schools and quickly become integrated into the school’s academic and social life. All students are placed in a tutor group and are expected to play a full part in tutor group and House activities.

Sixth Form students act as role models to the younger pupils and as ambassadors outside school; students are expected to dress smartly, attend punctually and behave responsibly.

Many Sixth Form students are prefects, contributing to the smooth running of the school on a day-to-day basis and some contribute to the School Council, to help determine the school’s future direction.

We are determined that every Post-16 student should realise their potential. Our school’s motto, “Aude Sapere” means “dare to be wise” and we hope all students strive to achieve knowledge and understanding of all of their subjects.

The school’s atmosphere is lively and purposeful. We have a reputation for being a school with traditional values and the highest academic standards, but we are also a school that embraces emerging technologies and prepares its students for the 21st Century.

Students joining Year 12 are able to choose from two different curriculums, AS levels or the International Baccalaureate and are taught by well-qualified subject teachers in groups of no more than 20 (often much smaller for the IB).

The size of the school allows us to provide not only a very wide range of courses, but also many different subject combinations. Typically students embark upon 4 AS courses in Year 12 or 6 subjects if they follow the IB.

In addition to timetabled activities, there is a wealth of extra-curricular opportunities on offer. As well as numerous successful sports teams, students can also participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Ten Tors, Musicals and Drama performances and partake in trips and visits (many of them abroad).

We offer a structured and supportive environment where students flourish and develop the independent learning skills and sense of responsibility necessary to be successful in their chosen pathways.

Students are fully supported through the UCAS application process and most of our students continue their education by joining Higher Education institutions in many of the top universities, including around 6-12 places at Oxbridge per year and, recently, two students successfully applying to Harvard.

We look forward to welcoming new and existing students to our open evening in the Autumn Term.
